Charcoal and inkjet prints on wall. Installation at The Front, New Orleans, LA.
Recently revealed online and confirmed by various news sources, Bush family emails were hacked, and one of the revelations that emerged was that George W. Bush has taken up painting. In this piece my 2 giant arms are reaching down the gallery walls holding two self portraits Bush painted of himself nude in the bathroom. As much as I despise the man and what he stands for, I can't help but feel a bit of sympathy and even pity for him after seeing the way he portrays himself in these paintings. After being essentially the most powerful man in the world, in these images he seems awkwardly human again. I find these images intimate, lonely, and sad. He seems trapped, laid bare, exposed. Is he maybe even attempting to wash himself clean of his past wrongdoings? After working in self portraiture myself for some time and making work about my own existential doubts and fears, I can't help but feel a connection to Bush through his paintings.
